Lyrical Analysis: Let Me Know - Winona Oak

I first heard this song on the last episode of Season 2 of The L Word Generation Q. I immediately added it to my library on Apple Music lol. Though the scene they used it in was a waste IMO, it was a fitting song for the situation at hand. I have to say, shows have provided me with a new selection of music I probably would never have stumbled upon otherwise (like Euphoria but I will discuss that in another post).

This song is upbeat, romantic, and dreamy at the same time. After listening to it carefully, I thought of it being the perfect song that would describe the following situation:

Friends that low key have feelings for each other but never gave each other a chance over fear of ruining a really good friendship. Yet after failed relationships, they realize they long to be with each other. And so, they give love a chance.

INTRO

Help me, I don't know how to begin
Never thought that I would let you in

But you're the one I choose
I belong with you
Every hand I lost
Has brought me something I can't lose

Setting: a couple that shares history in the form of friendship and are now initiating a romantic relationship. The POV is from the individual that is making the realization that this “friend” had been there all along and is the one that they really belong with.

CHORUS

So if you love me, let me know
We don't have to fall so fast
Take it slow
Unless you want to hold me close
We can make a good thing last
Don't let go

If you love me, stop beating around the bush and just tell me. Be bold and stand in your truth. We can take our time, unless you really want it*, and in that case say no more… lol. That is how I would summarize this part of the chorus.

CHORUS (2nd half)

You know perfect is impossible
But you've got me hoping
If the world is burning down
You're the one I'm holding
Don't let go

There is no such thing as a perfect person/relationship but darling you’re pretty damn close. If all goes to shit, at least we got each other. The music here is amazing, it ties really well with the lyrics and makes you feel the emotion (at least for me it does lol).

Verse 1

I've been tired of waking up alone
Second guessing, shaking on the phone

I am tired of playing these mind games with my feelings, writing you ghost messages where I profess my love but never bold enough to hit send. I want you and I am ready to commit to you.

CHORUS repeats

BRIDGE

I think of all the wasted time
We're standing on the sideline waiting for a sign
I found you there

So much time has passed, and yet here we are waiting for the “stars to align”… but there you are, there you have been all along.

BRIDGE 2nd half

No, nothing is a waste of time
I had to take a hit to learn to read the signs
I found you there

All this waiting was worth it in the long run, to be where we are right now. We needed to experience life separately to be together (finally).

I had fun doing this lyrical breakdown. Hope you guys give the song a chance, it really is a great song.

Love is love.
