Oscars 2022 recap

And the Oscar goes to…. 2022 recap (kinda, sorta)

The Academy Award ceremony last night was more than we imagined it would be. It is the most prestigious award one can receive in the film industry, so the emotions are always running high in the room.

To start off, I will be honest in saying that the award I looked forward to the most was Animated Feature Film of the Year. As a Colombian, I was thrilled to see Encanto win. I’m so proud of the success this beautiful film has had. It illustrated Colombia’s culture so beautifully, from the people and their traditions, to the beautiful landscapes Colombia has.I am grateful that this movie came out at the time it did because I got to see the impact it had on the three generations in my family. The discussion my sisters and I had with our parents and nephews of the movie, was one I will forever cherish. My youngest nephew has watched it at least a dozen times and my other two nephews cannot get tired of the songs from the movie. They especially love “Dos Oruguitas”, a song performed by Sebastian Yatra. He performed it at the Oscars and his nerves were high, you could see his hands literally shaking but he sang amazing!! Without a doubt, this film will live on in the generations to come.

Troy Kotsur, from “CODA”, made history last night winning Best Supporting Actor; he became the second deaf actor to win an Oscar. “CODA” won best picture as well, and it is the first time a streaming service (Apple+) wins Best Picture. It is a huge win and moment for the deaf community and I hope this will set momentum for more representation. The name of the film is the abbreviation for “Children of Deaf Adults”. I saw the movie as well and I highly recommend it. I was left with a new perspective of the importance of teaching sign language and how I need to do my part in learning.

The Oscar’s opened with Beyoncé’s “Be Alive” performance, a song that was made for the King Richard movie. She graced us with her enormous talent and brilliance. I later found out that the tennis field she performed this at was a tennis court the Williams’ sisters would practice at with their father in Compton. The performance was dazzling and she was stunning as always.

The last thing I wanted to comment on was the whole fiasco that broke out with Will Smith. His behavior tainted the win he had for best actor and therefore, stole the spotlight from the other winners’ moment such as the historical win of Tony Kotsur. It really sucked because although he deserved that win, nobody can get past the violent behavior that erupted from him moments earlier in the night. Jada needs to stop putting their marriage business out there and worry more about her husband's well being. I also did not agree with Chris Rock’s joke. There are people that believe there should be no limits in comedy but I disagree, there are lines you should not cross and mocking someone for their illness is foul.

And on that note, this is just another example of why giving someone that much power can be dangerous. Restraint over reaction everyday, It doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are, self control is a virtue to strive for.
