Writer’s desk anatomy
I am just about finished with decorating my writing desk and I am obsessed with how it all came out. Call me self absorbed but when you’ve dreamt about something for so many years and it finally comes to fruition, you use any and every opportunity to savor it. That is how I feel about my writing desk space. It is a sacred haven. My happy place.
It’s always been important for me to be in an environment that is conducive to inspiration, to allow me to immerse myself into my writing without holding back. As a kid, this place was my bed or the space between my little sister’s bed and mine. It was my hiding place to write in peace because I would lay down and anyone that would walk in the room wouldn’t know I was crouched down laying in between the two beds. Now, I am blessed with a whole room in my home dedicated to this passion of mine.
I wanted to be very intentional about the items I wanted to use to decorate because of the amount of writing I’ll do there. The first item that popped into my head was having a symbol of love. After spending some time searching on Pinterest, I came across the perfect depiction of love. The chemical composition of oxytocin:the love hormone. A perfect way to convey the importance of love and science in my life. I am a sucker for love, I create super cringey sappy scenes in my head. I have written a million scripts of romantic comedies in my head. Handwritten love letters just hit different. Poems come to me in strands of memories of the best moments with my loved ones. The best way I can articulate this memory to poem translation is like those file converters you use online (i.e. mov. to mp4 or wav to mp3). I “upload” a memory and convert it to a poem. This sounds very nerdy in retrospect, its very me though.
The other item I wanted to hang in my desk area is a canvas of a picture I took of the Haleakala sunrise in Maui. That image is very meaningful to me. My husband and I woke up at the crack of dawn and camped out 10,000 feet above sea level in the cold to wait for the spectacle. Mark Twain said of this place “It is the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed” and boy was he right. Haleakala means House of Sun in Hawaiian, and this place is the perfect spot to view the sunrise/sunset. That moment alongside the love of my life will stick with me through the end of time and beyond.
On my desk there are a couple items that are worth noting such as pencil holder with the words “Be thankful for everyday” and a desk sign “Make today amazing”, a fountain pen and ink set from Naples, Italy, and a candle that says “Shhh.. I’m writing”. These are special gifts from a close friend and my husband.
This is my first blog entry written from this cozy writing space I carefully created. I hope you feel inspired to create a space like this in your own home for whatever you want it to be. In a world driven by technology, it is important to have these spaces in our homes. It could be something as simple as a beanbag facing a window where you can sit down and read or journal or listen to music as you look outside. Or it can be a hammock outside where you can stare up at the sky and reflect. My point is to create spaces in our home where we are encouraged to decompress so that in turn we pour into our self love reservoir.
SN: I challenge you to handwrite a letter to a special loved on and send it in the mail. I promise you, you’ll feel good after doing so. A handwritten letter hits different, it always will.
The first song selection is one that reminds me of watching the sunrise at Haleakalā, despite the title of the song. My favorite part of the song is the chorus:
But here I am
Next to you
The sky is so blue
In Malibu
Next to you
In Malibu
The second one is self explanatory. My favorite verse is:
Muy lindo en Instagram lo que posteas
Pa' que yo vea cómo te va de bien, pero te haces mal
Porque el amor no se compra con na'
