Story time: Dunkin Donuts Lady
This past weekend I had quite the encounter while getting breakfast at DD in Queens. Sit back, grab a snack, it’s story time!
Saturday morning we stopped at a Dunkin Donuts in Queens to grab breakfast. My husband waited outside, while I quickly (or so I thought) went in. I get there and there is one customer in front of me. If I had to guess she was probably in her late thirties. She wanted croissants, one with just cheese the other two with ham and cheese. For some reason, the cashier was not getting her order down and kept asking her to repeat it. This made the woman a bit annoyed but she kept her composure. I could tell by her body language she was holding back from causing a scene. She folded her arms and kept adjusting her baseball cap. I also noticed the cashier was really nervous and was trying her best to understand her. This was the scene. What follows is my big ass mouth trying to ease the tension as we both wait for our orders to be ready.
As we are waiting, I noticed she had a treble clef behind her left ear and the bass clef behind her right one. Recently, I got the treble clef tatted on my right ankle while my husband got the bass clef on his left. I found those tattoos neat so I opened my big mouth and said “I like your tattoos”. I showed her mine and told her my husband had the bass clef. That is all I did, but what followed was the opening of a can of worms lol… She went on to discuss how she was a musician and in the corporate world so she has to be strategic of the placement of her tats. She told me the story of almost every tattoo she had on her body. Which ones hurt, which ones didn't, how big they were. Then she told me how she is still conceptualizing her next one because she is looking to get it drawn out not stenciled. Mind you, by this time her croissants are ready and in her hands! My order is still not done, so I have no choice but to stick around and listen to her. To make matters worse, I left my cellphone in the car so I could not even fake someone calling me to remove myself from the conversation lol.. What I kept doing instead was looking down at my watch, hoping just hoping she would get the hint that I needed to get to a place and no longer going to entertain her tattoo rant. But nope she didn’t, and the order felt like it was taking an eternity!
Finally, they call out my order! I quickly pick it up and this woman kept talking!! As I am going to walk out, she asks me “do you want to walk?” I acted dumb because I could not believe her proposal, and she said it again. I most definitely did not filter my perplexed reaction, I gave her this look like ummmm hell no ma’am. I politely declined and jetted the fuck out of there! I get to the car and tell my husband everything and he just laughs and says “Next time just keep your mouth shut”. Moral of the story: Sometimes being kind puts you in an uncomfortable position, it is okay to keep to yourself in public spaces. Note to self: Smile and carry on about your day.
Love this song. It is a song about love that cannot be. My favorite verse.
“We've become numb to what we know is wrong
But no one knows but us
The feelings rush every single time we touch
Even though it's what we want, can't keep this up for long”
