Serena

September is here! Cue Earth, Wind & Fire -September The U.S. Open kicked off this week!

When discussing professional tennis, there is no way you cannot include Serena Williams in the convo (unless you don’t care for the contributions of women in sports). I love Serena Williams. She has broken so many records (and rackets) throughout all these years. To me, she is the GOAT. She stands for so much more than tennis to me. She stands for women empowerment, equality, courage, strength, persistence, discipline, resilience, grace, intelligence I can go on and on. I love the fact she doesn’t back down from no one and is not afraid of speaking her mind in such a way only she can (Just watch any interview where they ask her dumb questions). I am rooting for her to get a W (#24) this year, but regardless she will always be a winner in my book. Off the court she is a dedicated mother, wife, daughter, sister, activist and entrepreneur. In 2018 she launched the clothing line “Serena”; a clothing line that centers around amplifying women’s inherent greatness through clothing that is unapologetic and reflects their true selves. I feel so grateful to be living during her lifetime because of all the contributions she has made to the empowerment of women, specifically women of color. Serena has been on the verge of death; she suffered a pulmonary embolism after delivering her daughter via an emergency C-section. Doctors didn't believe her (medical negligence & example of institutional racism) when she felt something was wrong, and it was not until she made them perform a CT scan that they realized she was right. Serena has endured and recovered from multiple injuries, has had to face inequalities, racism, discrimination, and has always risen above it all. Serena has made this world a better place because of who she is. I can talk about her all day long, so I know this won’t be the only entry I mention her in.

As much I wish she could play tennis forever, I am aware she is nearing the end of her career. Make no mistake Serena will be great in whatever she sets out to do.
